TRAVERSO'S "DEEP SOUTH OF ITALY" WINE TASTING AND SPECIALS THIS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15...NOON TO 3PM IN OUR STORE
Discover the wines of Southern Italy. Long in the shadows of Tuscany and Piedmont, the wines of Southern Italy are emerging as some of the hottest in the marketplace today. Just a few years ago we would taste many wines from Italy's south and find the winemaking style to be quite rustic. Recently, many of the wineries of Southern Italy have updated the winemaking quality and focus. Today these wines have incredible character and show the diversity of what Italy has to offer. All are indigenous varietals...no "New World" grape blends or influence. It's the REAL Italy in the glass. This is your chance to come and taste the incredible line up.

2006 Mastroberardino "Nova Serra" Greco di Tufo OUR PRICE $17.99
An ancient varietal from Italy's Campania Region. Made from 100% Greco di Tufo grapes. The Mastroberardino family rescued and re-launched the ancient Greco vine, which was close to extinction, just after the World Wars. Made from rigorously selected grapes, Novaserra, which has now become a classic, has unprecedented organoleptic complexity. Intense straw yellow in color, this wine has prominent aromas of apricot, pear, peach, almond, apple fruit and mineral notes. NovaSerra Greco di Tufo is noteworthy for its excellent acidity and smoothness, with a characteristic background of bitter almond. This wine pairs well with seafood and fish dishes of all complexities.
"The 2006 Greco di Tufo Nova Serra is a clean, focused Greco di Tufo with prominent notes of flinty minerality, white peaches, grapefruit, mint and flowers. This linear, sinewy wine will offer its finest drinking at the dinner table, where its bright acidity will pair beautifully with a variety of foods." - Wine Advocate - Issue #178/ August 31, 2008 - 89 points - Discovering Italy's Finest Wine Values
2007 Mastroberardino Fiano di Avellino OUR PRICE $24.99
A rare varietal from Italy's Campania Region. The grape Fiano was known in antiquity as “apiana” as it was noticed that bees had a particular affinity for this vine. A rare vine traditionally found near hazelnut orchards, Fiano di Avellino appears to have adopted some of these notes into its flavor profile. Straw-yellow in color, this wine offers a delicate bouquet of pears and toasted hazelnut, followed by hints of white flowers and tropical fruit. It is a perfect match for hearty seafood or poultry dishes.
“Fiano is naturally rich with aromas of pear and Golden Delicious apple and you will find both here. The wine is smooth and supple and ends with a bright point of citrus fruit on the close.” - Wine Enthusiast - Nov. 1st, 2008/ Buying Guide - 87 points
2006 Librandi Ciro Rosso Classico OUR PRICE $12.99
Unique wine from Italy's "Toe of the Boot" region - Calabria. Made from 100% Gaglioppo, the most important native varietal from the Cirò Marina area. Ciró Rosso is fermented and aged for one year in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Ciró Rosso offers a delightful bouquet of spice, dried fruit, wild berries and plums. Excellent texture and firm, ripe tannins are hallmark attributes of this wine. Incredibly rich and easy-going, Ciró Rosso is the wine of choice for spicy meat dishes, roasted baby goat or lamb, and roasted meat with peppers.
"A long-established family firm specializing in the indigenous varieties of Calabria, some of which have histories as long as that of the region itself. Unquestionably the premier maker in this region." - Quarterly Review of Wines - Spring 2007 - Southern Italy's Best
2006 Botromagno Primitivo Puglia OUR PRICE $14.99
An Italian Zinfandel (Primitivo) from Italy's "Heal of the Boot" region - Puglia. Made from 100% Primitivo vines that are planted and trained in the alberello (little bush) method. This traditional, low-yielding training system employed throughout southern Italy, southern France and Spain, requires that the vines are trained close to the ground, in small bushes. The must is macerated with the skins for 12 days and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for one year in stainless steel to ensure ideal structure and easy-going drinkability. Botromagno's Primitivo is intensely ruby red in color with persistent aromas of wild fruits. On the palate, the wine is velvety, elegant and intense with firm tannins that provide structure without over-powering the wine's natural character.
"Botromagno’s medium-bodied 2006 Primitivo is loaded with dark fruit, spices, leather, tobacco and roasted coffee beans. In this vintage it is especially forward, and looks to be a relatively fast-maturing wine. Primitivo is the Apulian name for Zinfandel." - Wine Advocate - Issue #178/ August 31, 2008 - 86 points - Discovering Italy's Finest Wine Values
2000 Taurino Notarpanaro Salento Rosso OUR PRICE $16.99
Made from the Negroamaro varietal which translates to "black bitter" grown on Italy's "Heal of the Boot" region of Puglia. A pure Negroamaro from 20-year old Notarpanaro vineyards in the Salento area. After traditional fermentation, Notarpanaro is aged for 36 months (six of which are in Allier, Nevers and Tronçais). To add extra elegance, Notarpanaro is aged for three more years in the bottle before release. Ruby red in color with a very elegant bouquet of tobacco and licorice, Notarpanaro is rich and full-bodied offering delicious flavors of ripe red berries, pepper, anise and spice. With a complex texture framed by fine tannins, Notarpanaro is the wine of choice for roasted meat, game, sausages and medium-aged cheese.
"Savory aromas of earth support plenty of succulent cherry fruit in this ripe country wine. A good match for grilled sausages." - Wine & Spirits - June 2007 - 88 points - Southern Italy Tastings
2006 Mastroberardino Aglianico Campania OUR PRICE $24.99
The Agliancio varietal is know as the "Barolo of the South" made famous in Italy's Campania region. Aglianico thrives in the unique microclimate of Campania, influenced both by the volcanic soils of Mount Vesuvius and its temperate maritime climate. The result is a unique and characterful wine with great complexity and ageability. Ruby-red in color with intense aromas of blackberries and wild black cherries known as locally as le amarene in Italian. The delightful Aglianico manages to achieve both structure and softness on the palate, with flavors of dark berries and minerality that continue to unfold in the finish. Pairs beautifully with roasted meats or tomato-based soups and sauces.
"Medium ruby. Floral, fresh aromas of red berries and sweet spices. High but harmonious acidity gives wonderful delineation to the sweet red fruit flavors, with smooth, fine tannins giving this tasty wine a seamless mouth feel. ...this is an irresistible glass of wine and a terrific buy." - International Wine Cellar - July / August 2008 - Issue 139 - 89 points - The Best Wines of Southern Italy
